The Novice’s Guide To Safer Driving
February 15, 2010 by Derrick Daniels
Understanding the importance of road safety is something we should all strive to achieve as it can directly or indirectly affect ourselves and others on the road. For a learner driver, one of the best ways to gain this understanding is by attending driving school.
Driving school is a common sense approach to learning to drive. Driving instructors are qualified and understand all the rules, laws and regulations when it comes to driving. This is a great starting point for the young learner drive as it will ensure they develop sound knowledge of driving; both theory and practical.
A driving instructor will teach you that road safety begins before you enter the car. There are a few safety checks that you must carry out before turning on the ignition. Have you checked the pressure of the wheels? Also, be sure to check water and oil levels are sufficient. Finally, ensure all turn signals and lights are working. These checks only take a matter of minutes.
Secondly, learner drivers should familiarise themselves with the car they intend to drive. The power a car contains varies from each model. If the family car is a powerful vehicle and differs from the one they've used at the driving school, spend some time with them before allowing them to take the car out on their own.
Drink driving pedestrians, mobile phones and other drivers on the road. These are all major distractions which can result in you being involved in a car accident. It does not even have to be your fault! It's often said that it's not the accident that you see that kills you, but the one you don't see. In recent years, many driving schools have included a larger syllabus in regards to distractions while driving. Many law enforcement agencies have also taken a hard line against such things by introducing new laws that forbid driving while intoxicated or talking and texting on a mobile phone while driving.
Finally, if your car should break down, you should put on your hazard lights so that other motorists are aware there is a problem. Discuss a plan for your child to follow if any problems should occur such as a break down and what numbers they can call for assistance if you're registered for road side service.
